Seige of Kaiapoi Pa - Social Studies

In social studies we did work around the Seige of Kaiapoi Pa. I used History of the Kaiapoi Pa as well as google search to get the information. I used the following questions to spread the information:

  • When did Māori establish Kaiapohia Pā

  • Who was involved in the siege? What are some of the possible reasons for the attack?

  • Who was Te Rauparaha? Where was he from? Why was he so feared?

  • What happened to the iwi after the siege?

  • What is a Pā?

Maori established the Pa in the 1700's, around 30 years after moving to the South Islands in Kaiapoi, or previously Kaiapohia. Tu Rakautahi, a Ngai Tahu chief built it with the help of his men.

Three years before the Seige occurred, A Ngati Toa chief, Te Rauparaha travelled to the South Island from North Canterbury. Fighting and killing tribes in Kaiapoi and Omihi, Ngai Tahu were cautious of Te Rauparaha and his men when they suddenly appeared at the Pa. Claiming to be greenstone traders.

Before Ngati Toa could make the first move, Ngai Tahu attacked, killing 8 chiefs and forcing Te Rauparaha to retreat. Then three years later the Siege occurred. 1831 was the Siege date.

Te Rauparaha forced Ngai Tahu to close their gates, the young men were out greeting other tribes so there was no way of fighting it off, due to the gates being closed Te Rauparaha hoped he could starve them out.

Around 200 Ngai Tahu men escaped the battle, retreated to their camp in Massacre Hill and celebrated.

A Pa is a Maori village or defensive settlement according to google search.

In a Pa you have a tribe living there. There was a Wharenui, Whare, Pataka, Garden, Palisade and of course, People.

Wharenui Meeting House. Whare House. Pataka Food Storage. Palisade Fence area.

We also had to create our own Pa. Me and Charlize built one together
