Social Studies : Human Rights

In Social Studies the class has been learning about the Human Rights (yes, all 30 of them) using these links: Human Rights and Simpler Human Rights. With those we had two tasks. Either create a Poster that includes the Human Rights, all 30 must be used and presented in a high standard. Or get in a group, no more than four people and rank 5 to 10 Human Rights that are the most important.

Me and Charlize did the second option, we found the top ten (not in order) and added our reasoning's.

Wananga : Maths

Doing my word problem work I searched through for the needed number and then solved my problem from there on.

Eg: There are 77 biscuits in a packet. A supermarket orders 9778 packets. How many biscuits will be in the 9778 packets?

I looked for the two numbers needed in the problem:

There are 77 biscuits in a packet. A supermarket orders 9778 packets. How many biscuits will be in the 9778 packets?

I then wrote the numbers in this format:

                          9778
                       x     77

And then began solving it.

                          9778
                       x     77
                         68446
                    x 684460
                       752906

The final answer is 752 906.

So the amount of biscuits that will be in 9778 Packets is 752, 906

Pita Pockets

In foods everyone was assigned the task of making a Pita Bread Pockets on Thursday. All the ingredients were ready, the Pita Bread, sauces, cheese, carrot, sliced ham and shredded chicken and other foods.

First step : Get ingredients ready and cut the Pita Bread open in the middle to reveal the air pocket.

And the next step, which was simple,
add your ingredients into the pockets.

Health : Obesity

In health the class got to pick a topic and 6 big questions. The topic I chose was Obesity.

My main questions were:
Why would someone not be strongly with or against this topic/issue?
What are the long term effects of obesity on mental health?
Who is Involved?
How does society react to Obesity?
When and how did this issue come about?
What causes this issue? (Linking to - When and How did this Issue Come about?)

These questions were all colour coded, Red being difficult, Orange being middle ranged, and green being easy. The sixth question was a chose your own question.

Ways to deal (fix and possibly prevent) Obesity.
While obesity can be caused by Genetics you can always deal with it by seeking medical help, getting a healthy diet, and getting exercise.

English : Gloriavale

In English, amongst reading a book called Abomination Mrs Handley our English teacher had the class watch a documentary about Gloriavale. If you haven't heard of Gloriavale its a religious community.

Gloriavale's traditions appear more 19th century possibly earlier. The males do all the handy work. Building, farming, engineering while the females do all the 'easy' tasks. Cooking, making clothes, doing washing, teaching and so fourth.

The education would be from preschool up until year 10, if you are able to become a teacher or midwife example you'd get more education.

Around the age of two or three you'll start to receive chores, putting washing away, vacuuming and as you get older you'd get harder jobs. For females that could be helping with cooking, males could be helping with the farming.

While Gloriavale follows the Christian religion, there is a lot of things they do. You get no say in who you marry, the first meeting is the proposal, and the first time you touch is when you officially get married at the wedding. Many more things are put in place to stay with god.

Those who live in Gloriavale are happy as its the only life they have, they don't know any different from the way they live.

People in Gloriavale don't have the human rights they deserve, they don't get to make choices for themselves, the clothing they wear, what they eat, who they marry and live with and so on. If I had the choice I'd never live in Gloriavale nor be happy living there due to the lack of freedom I'd have.

Wananga : Math

Yesterday (Monday 2nd August) Miss Bancroft helped me with figuring out how to converting Percentages into fractions, decimals into Percentages and with finding the HCF (highest common factor).

Example Question-
56% to Fraction.

Take the 56 and put it over a Hundred like so 56/100.
The reasoning being that a percent is out of 100.

That would be correct if you didn't need to simplify it. To simplify it you find out what number both can be divisible by.

56 ÷ 2 = 28
100 ÷ 2 = 50

That makes 28/50. These numbers can be divided again.

28 ÷ 2 = 14
50 ÷ 2 = 25

Making 14/25. These numbers can be divided again but they cannot be divided by the same number. So the Answer of 56% to a Fraction would be 14/25.

Example Question 2 -
.85 into Percent.

To make a decimal into percentage you times the number by 100 (moving the dot 2 spaces to the right.)
The answer would be 85%

If you had 8.719 and had to make it into a percent you follow the same procedure. Having the answer of 871.9%

Example Question 3 -
45 / 5 Find the HCF

A factor is all the numbers that make a number up. 45 can be divided by: 1, 5, 9, 45. 5 can be divided by: 1, 5.
So the highest common factor would be 5.

Social Studies : Learning Time Line

Today we had to do a reflection of the work done this term.

My Learning Story

Hurumanu: 2 Humanities

Module: Power to the People

Name: Apollo (Safiyya) Searles

Teacher: Ds

Term: 2

Reflection:

Give at least three examples in each of the boxes below.

What We Did:

  • Informational Poster (Solo)
On a famous (inspirational) leader. Did mine on Joseph Stalin

  • Types of Government (Group)
    Learnt about the 7 types
Had to locate a country with one of these
Needed a leader who ran this type of Government

  • Political Parties (Group)
Created a speech about our Political Party then presented it in front of the class
Designed a logo that fit with our Party (Anti Bullying Party)
Made a poster with the Logo and Slogan.
    Came up with a slogan
    Manifesto

What I Learned:

  • Joseph Stalin was friends with Hitler

  • The 7 types of Government

  • Making a party isn’t easy

My Favourite Parts:

  • Being able to work with friends

  • Learning about someone I knew nothing about

  • Making a cool poster for my Party

My Next Steps:

  • Manage my time more

  • Focus on the must do steps (to prevent a few being left out)

  • Work at home as well as at school to help more work being made

CARR Values:

Make a statement below describing how you showed each of our CARR values during this Hurumanu.

Commitment

Focused on work and continued working during breaks to make sure it was finished before the due date, continuing to work when stuck, pushing through.

Achievement

Did good work, mainly with the Inspirational leader work although the types of Government work could have been finished to higher/better standards.

Resilience

When stuck I pushed through the work and it got better after it was hard.

Respect

Respecting my peers and teachers, making sure to use appropriate words and language.

Feedback for my Teachers:

Possibly assign the work earlier in time to allow more work to be done.
